Hip Hop FAQ

These are the names given to different sub-genres of Hip Hop dance.  Each one has its own background, pioneers, and defining stylistic elements.  We’ll be digging into all three in turn here at the studio.

The earliest pioneers of Hip Hop rarely worked with formal counts—everything was danced to a “feel.”  Toni Basil introduced counts to the Hip Hop community in the 1970s when the dance was brought into a more formal studio setting.

Don’t worry if you don’t know anything about counting beats!  We’ll cover all of that in class.

The short answer?  Yes.  Crews perform routines that have been choreographed, but battles between rival crews or individual dancers are usually improvised.
